Interview with Charlotte Hupfield of CHCeramics

Ces Creatively Asks :
Hello Charlotte, when I was looking for talented and innovative creatives to become a part of The Light Direction project, you were recommended to me by several people I follow on twitter. I just loved your beautiful art as soon as I checked out your site and from reading your blog I could see the love and attention to detail that goes into the process of producing your amazing work.
Taking up the challenge of designing some bespoke pieces for The Light Direction you created some beautiful pieces based on the seaside theme of the story. I had an opportunity to seamlessly write in a ceramic artist where a beautiful vase was already mentioned in the manuscript for the first printed novel and was delighted to offer this novel promotion to you.

In the story one of your vases is a gift from lead character Jeremy to his girlfriend lead character Emma.

Later in the story Emma and Jez choose to commission you for ceramics to use within their interior design business.

What did you think about The Light Direction project when I first explained what it is all about?
Charlotte Replies :
After initially hearing from you and reading your background behind The Light Direction on the website and everything that you are putting in to the project, I thought it was a fantastic idea and very supportive and innovative that you are offering small businesses a chance to be a part of it all.

Ces Creatively Asks :
Did you enjoy creating some bespoke ceramics for The Light Direction?

Charlotte Replies :
I loved it! I really enjoyed having a brief to work with and the inspirational mood board that was supplied reminded me of being back at college and how I used to work.

Ces Creatively Asks :
LOL well, that is what you get working with an old school designer. I kind of miss all that working on paper with mood boards too. I really love the way we have been able to work together as a totally collaborative creative team on the ceramics Charlotte and the pieces you have created are just amazing! Did you enjoy working on the seaside theme?

Charlotte Replies :
Because the majority of my work is based around nature such as landscapes, woodlands etc, it was fun to work with a seaside theme. I am so pleased with the outcome of the collection of pieces I have made for The Light Direction, they all turned out perfectly (which can be quite rare!)

Ces Creatively Asks :
How did you feel about it when you first found out you are being featured in The Light Direction printed novel series in this way?

Charlotte Replies :
I was so excited, and still am! It was such an appealing opportunity as I have been featured in magazines before, but have never been involved in anything like a printed novel. The support and buzz of working closely with a whole community of small creative businesses involved with The Light Direction is great too.

Ces Creatively Asks :
So, tell us a little of the Charlotte Hupfield story, why and when did you start the business and how has it evolved?

Charlotte Replies :
My journey began when I found myself fascinated with the qualities of clay as a material while at college. I loved art and being creative at school, which is why I studied a broad range of art at A Level, including Fine Art, 3D Design, and Art & Design. My A Levels were like a foundation course, as I was able to get involved and experience every material to know which media I wanted to specialise in.

I had always enjoyed surface pattern and design, which led me to go on to University in Coventry where I studied a 3 year BA Hons degree in Surface Decoration, and specialised in ceramics. I graduated in 2008 and have since been continuing to develop and broaden my work from my workshop at home. I am so proud of how far I have come during the past few years, and am so pleased with all of the amazing things that have happened. I can’t wait to find out what lies ahead of me in the future!

Ces Creatively Asks :
Ok thats the business, what is your story?
Charlotte Replies :
Aside from my passion with clay….. I have a beautiful cat named Molly, I have a huge soft spot for anything earthy, natural & organic which is where my inspiration comes from. I often enjoy going for walks in the woods. I love to sit out in the garden on a summer evening chatting with a glass of wine.
Friends and family are important to me. Sunshine makes me smile. My favourite foods are home made pizza, roast chicken & marshmallows (although not all together!), and I love cooking tasty new recipes. One day I would love to live out in the countryside surrounded by fields full of horses, my favourite animal. I think that just about sums me up!

Ces Creatively Asks :
Finally, as I am still looking form more small businesses to work with on this project, what would you say to anyone else considering getting involved?
Charlotte Replies :
Go for it, it is an amazing opportunity and working with The Light Direction means being part of a super supportive creative community of small businesses.
